In order to survive successfully people need to learn how to absorb information they are being provided every day. Let’s take a closer look at this sentence word by word. “Survive successfully” mean to represent our happy state of being. When the happiness of the man is not being counted into the equation of success, there is no success at all. “Learn” implies that there are skills that we don’t know yet and they might change a perspective how do we look at the information around us. What about the word “information”? Is every message that we receive an information? I personally think not. Information in my world implies message necessary for my interests and life. As a matter of fact, we lack this in our life more than ever since the times of Ms. Stein. We replaced information with advertisements, articles full of gossip, and meaningless small talks.
I’ll paint a picture with words. It’s six in the morning. Alarm clock strikes and radio broadcast fills the room with broadcast. How amazing it would be to wake up with an energizing music being played from speakers. What do we usually get instead? Advertisements. Turning on the TV while preparing my breakfast I would probably got the same. Driving to work, no matter if by car or public transport, there is virtually no space without billboards and advertisement posters. It’s not information they provide. Who needs a new perfume, dress or a car every other day?
In addition to this age of product selling techniques that surrounds us all day long, Media as medium were reduced to channel filled with gossip being broadcasted as First-class News. Main time of any TV channel now is being filled with TV shows following of life of main set celebrities. People, in the past usually called an actors, nowadays can be described as full time interests and reporters on celebrity area provide details about their life that private detectives would not be ashamed to be able to gather.
Finally, what has become of everyday personal communication? Do we share our personal troubles with friends and colleagues that surround us all day? Small talk was replaced by gossips talk that discuss the newest trends of clothing of others, especially celebrities and their comparison to the ideal “broadcasted” versions we see in ads.
Summarizing, we don’t really focus in our lives on information. When we live days in routine, we surrender our uniqueness to flashy ads we are trying to copy. That’s not the world that deserves a future. The world that does is full of knowledge, and research, and meaningful fun. It is the world full of discoveries and full of compassion, friendships and everything I tend to find outside of consumer society. Living in a big city tends to go this way, but it doesn’t have to be the only way. Maybe Ms. Stein was right when she said, that overload of information damage our common sense. Mine wasn’t damaged yet. I read, travel, share and blog. And yet I wasn’t overload with everything I wanted to know. The choice makes a difference.
